Here are two simple versions of a traditional toy. It is pictured on an ancient Greek vase, and we know that the little daughter of Marie Antoinette had one beautifully carved in ivory. It was a favourite in Victorian nurseries, and made in wood, still turns up occasionally at craft markets and gift shops.
